Welcome to Hammerstein

Hammerstein is situated between Swakopmund and Lüderitz, nestled between the Nubib and Tsaris mountains. It is an ideal stopover for travellers to the south of Namibia. It is in close proximity to the beautiful Sossusvlei region and only 60km from Sesriem.

Visitors have a choice between bungalows equipped for self-caterers, camping facilities or dinner, bed and breakfast lodging. A few kilometers from the Lodge, rocky outcrops of massive granite boulders conjure up visions of a giant’s playground. It is from one of these boulders – an enormous rock shaped like a hammer – that “Hammerstein”, the German name of the farm, was derived.

About Us

We invite you to have a drink in our garden while watching the Springbok graze on the grass.

The name "Hammerstein" was given to the farm by the German Survey company in colonial times.

Hammerstein started with Swakara (Karakul) farming and in 1992 the lodge was built. We started as a small guest house with only 5 rooms, at the moment we've expanded to 56 rooms. The lodge is owned by the Porteus family, Anton and Gerty, their son Matthew and daughter Henreza.

We encourage you to join our experienced guides on a "Wild Cat Walk."

You will have the opportunity to meer our Caracals, Cheetahs and the famous Lisa, our Leopard. Come and learn more about these wonderous cats.

We also offer Nature Drives into the surrounding area, where you can experience the beautiful mountains and grasslands. At Hammerstein we will assist you with booking any other activities eg. balloon safaris and flights over the world famous Sossusvlei desert.
